Day 288 – Planning

The challenge in FitNation this week is to plan all of our meals for the next day in My Fitness Pal.  We get one point for posting a picture of our plan and then another point if we actually follow that plan.

I hate this challenge.

Planning my meals is not my forte (which is strange since I’m typically pretty OCD about planning stuff)  I normally grab whatever I have time for at breakfast and then just throw a sandwich or a lunchable in the lunch box and head out the door.   Sometimes my days can be a real struggle.  I always get hungry around 9:30 (breakfast is at 6:30) and never plan for it.  This is definitely the time of day where I make my worst eating decisions.  The hunger will get out of control and I’ll have some candy or Cliff and I will go out to eat somewhere.  We still make better decisions than we used to, but I want to get to the point where I’m making good decisions, not just better decisions.

So that brings me to Monday, which was the first day of the challenge.  Sunday night I spent nearly an hour planning out things that I could have this week so that I would stick to my plan and snag those points!  Here was my plan:

PlanningI put the English muffin into one meal, but I actually ate half at 10AM with cream cheese and the other half at 2 with peanut butter.  I’ve been on a big bagel kick since my recent experience with Einstein’s.  I am also totally in love with Laughing Cow cream cheese!  That stuff is amazing and only 45 calories per wedge.

I was blown away by the difference I felt.  My cravings were nonexistent, I didn’t feel starved all day or like I was just counting the hours until my next meal, and I felt like I had more energy.  I’ve been resting my leg in preparation for vacation this week and the race next month, so I was afraid I would feel blah after my second rest day.  The only time that I was concerned was right after work and before I left for class.  We had just gone to the grocery and when I walked into the kitchen there were all kinds of goodies for our road trip (healthy goodies, but not if you eat 10 of them!) staring me in the face.  Without hesitation I hid them all in the cabinet so that they would be out of sight and out of mind.  We actually started doing that months ago, but I felt like I was strong enough to leave it all out so that I could have some of my cabinet space back.

Apparently I was wrong.

Once the snacks were put away I felt 100% better and was fine until I had dinner when I got home from class.  I was so happy to complete the first day of the challenge.

Unfortunately, the second day (and all subsequent days since then) did not go that way.  I was still under my calorie goals, but with everything going on this week I just wasn’t able to stick to the plans I had made.  My first mistake was assuming that me or Cliff would have time to cook this week.  Considering everything that we have to do to get ready for our trip, there was no way that we were cooking full out meals like I had originally planned.

Even though I didn’t complete the entire week I’m still going to work on my planning skills.  It definitely seemed to help me keep better control over my cravings.  When we get back from vacation I’m going to try the 21 Day Fix and I won’t have any choice but to plan then!

Day 285 – Mother’s Day Weekend

10333755_10201845371120694_2940377993776055539_oI had a great weekend with my Mom!  I took Friday off from work for school stuff and also so I could be home as soon as she pulled into the driveway.  I started my day with an hour on the elliptical (a first!) while watching Rachel’s opening night on Glee.  Have I mentioned lately just how grateful I am to that show?  It really got me up and moving when I first started working out and I’m so sad to see that it’s ending next year.  However, I’m really happy that Lea Michele’s career looks like it’s going to keep getting better, so I’m sure that I will continue to e-stalk her.

My Mom got in around 4 on Friday and we decided to ride up to Kroger to pick up steaks and a salad for dinner (I still can’t get over the fact that I ate a SALAD with dinner instead of a loaded baked potato!)  Cliff makes the best steaks I’ve ever had so I would much rather have a nice dinner at home for 1/4 of the price than a subpar dinner at a fancy steakhouse.  After dinner we decided to ride over to our friend Jason’s house.  He adores my Mom and doesn’t get to see her very often.  We lived next door to him and his wife for almost six years and became very close friends.  So whenever my Mom is in town he always asks us to drop by.  The weather was perfect, so we wound up sitting in his garage until after 10PM!  After we left we decided to stop at McDonald’s for an ice cream cone.  Best 170 calories ever!

My Mom and I got up early Saturday and went to the salon to have our hair done.  There was an hour break between them so we rode over to Cato’s so that I could look for a pair of shoes to match my new dress.  I didn’t find anything there, but I did score some nice dress pants for $7 (thanks Mom!) and a really cute pair of flip-flops.  I also picked up a cute pair of earrings and promptly discovered that my holes had grown up!  I told you I didn’t wear much jewelry.

After the salon we left to meet everyone at the nail salon, which was only about 10 minutes away.  When we pulled in I didn’t see anyone’s car so we just decided to wait.

I decided to go into the nail salon and see if anyone was there, but I didn’t see anyone.  Not only that, but they were on at least an hour wait and no one would even come to the desk to assist me.  I decided to take a business card and go to the car and call them.  I called and asked if they had a reservation for a bachelorette party and they told me that they had showed up, the salon didn’t have enough room for everyone, so they left.

No phone call, no text…I hadn’t heard from anyone.  I called Cliff to see if anyone called him after my phone had died at 2:15 and he said no.

So we left.

I checked my phone as soon as I got to a charger and there was nothing.  No missed called, texts, voicemails…

Needless to say, I was a little annoyed.

Oh well, the day turned out to be awesome anyway.  We decided against pedicures (it was pouring outside) and when we went to our favorite sushi restaurant they had already closed to prep for their dinner crowd.  Instead, we decided to try a place my parents had been telling me about called Genghis Grill.  It’s a place where you choose your meat, veggies, seasonings, and sauces and then someone cooks it all in front of you on a huge, spinning hibachi grill.  I loved being able to control what went into my meal and it was delicious!

After lunch we went back to the house to relax a bit and then went to Old Navy and Sears to look for vacation clothes.  Mom hit the jackpot at Old Navy, but my luck must have run out there.  I did finally find the perfect shoes for my dress at Sears, so I’m done shopping for a while.  After the mall we went back to the house to spend the rest of the night relaxing.

Cliff and I wound up taking the dogs for long (2.5 miles) walk around the neighborhood and I’m amazed at how easy it was.  I actually felt lazy when we got back because the pace was just soooo slow compared to what I’m used to.  I thought it would help my “knee” pain, but no luck.  The knee pain actually seems to be a pulled hamstring, but I’m already feeling much better after a day of rest and ice.  I took another rest day today after reading all the horror stories about continuing to train through pulled muscles.

I got up early Sunday and cooked Mom her customary “sammitch” for Mother’s Day and then hung out with her until she left to go home.  I’m already missing her even though I get to see her again in four days.  I was supposed to meet Erin again for our weekly 5K, but since it was Mother’s Day (and her birthday!) and my leg is all hurty, we decided to reschedule for Thursday.  So instead of a 5K, I spent my day with my leg propped up and iced while I did a TON of homework.

I’m amazed at how much I miss my morning run/walk already.  I mean, I only went twice last week but I already feel a difference.  My moods were drastically better last week and held up for several days afterwards.  Last night and this morning I could feel my mood start to shift and I know it’s from not exercising for two days (three if you don’t count the dog walk).  Every time I stop working out for longer than a couple days, I feel my irritability comes back almost immediately.  This time, I’m going to get a foam roller and study up on stretching so that I can (hopefully) stop having these issues.  However, right now I’m just worried about being back to 100% before we leave on Friday.  Just four more days until vacation!

Sidenote – I was able to keep strong through the weekend and pulled off a 1.2 pound loss this week!  Hopefully I can stay the course on vacation as well.

Day 281 – Morning Running

As per the usual Kentucky weather, we have completely skipped spring and jumped right into summer.  This means that running after work is less than pleasant.  My options?  Running on the treadmill or giving morning workouts a try again.  Considering that the treadmill was starting to cause some serious issues with my mental status as far as running was concerned, I thought I would throw caution to the wind and set the alarm for 5:15AM.

And it amazing.

If you would have told me last week year that I would be getting up at 5AM to run I say (and honestly believe) that you were crazy.  I am not a morning person…or at least I wasn’t until this week.  I’ve been getting up early for years, but I’ve never been happy about it.  However, the thought of running 90 degree heat sounded even less appealing than waking up before the crack of dawn.

Wednesday morning I was up and out the door by 6AM.  I wasn’t ready for anything earlier just yet so we decided we would just go to work a little later than normal (we have very flexible scheduling) and start off small.

The run was terrible.

I was nauseous almost immediately and my heart rate was 140 before I even got into my first jogging interval.  I didn’t think I would going to even make it off my street, let alone go the entire 31 minutes.

I was right.  I wound up getting really sick in a field not far from my house and almost called it quits.  I wasn’t actually sick, I just learned the hard way that my body doesn’t like physical activity on a completely empty stomach.  I made it through the first three minute and five minute intervals but then I had to stop.  I decided to just finish out the 30 minutes by walking around the neighborhood.

Initially, I felt like it was an epic failure, but by the time I got home I had a huge smile on my face.

A year ago the thought of me getting up and walking/jogging a mile and a half at 6AM would have been laughable.  Hell, it might have been impossible.  I couldn’t jog for 30 seconds 6 months ago, and I’m up to five minutes now.  Just thinking about how far I’ve come made the experience amazing.  As so many things before it has been, it was a learning experience.  This morning was already a drastic improvement.

So, for now at least, it looks like I’m a morning runner.

I sat down tonight and made THE PERFECT PLAYLIST.  Of course, as luck would have it, tomorrow is a rest day (I.E. time for me to get my Gleek on while I cross-train on the elliptical) so I won’t get to sample it until Saturday.

My Mom is coming up tomorrow night and I am SO excited!  We’re going to my friend Sarah’s bachelorette party on Saturday.  Everyone is meeting at a nail salon in town for pedicures and then we’re having dinner at her favorite sushi restaurant.  Mom and I are going to the salon to get our hair done before the pedicures, so it’s going to be a nice, relaxing weekend.  I took tomorrow off work so that I could be sure to get all of my homework out of the way and I’m really looking forward to just kicking back for a day or so.  Planning to keep on top of my food this weekend, but I know it’s going to be difficult.  Hopefully the running in the morning will continue to curb the cravings like it has today and yesterday.  I plan to only eat sushi Saturday and Cliff and I are making my Mom a yummy surprise dinner tomorrow night.  (Surprise Mom!)

Now it’s time for bed because I still plan on getting up with Cliff tomorrow and working out before spending the rest of the day curled up in a recliner learning about PC storage.
